The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Walter Mitty, once friends with adventure, now lives a boring life as a negative asset manager for Life Magazine. To get away from his boring life, he day-dreams or "zones out" as his sister calls it. One day, a very important piece of photography genius, for the cover on the last issue of Life Magazine, goes missing. It's up to Walter to find it, and face a world full of adventure.
I heard and saw many things about this last year, but didn't think much about. I recently saw it at our local Redbox box and decided that I would watch. I didn't expects much, and just hoped it would entertain me for a couple of hours. Did it do it's job? Or did it leave me day-dreaming?

Pros- I want to start off by saying, this movie is beautiful! It is actually one of the greatest looking movies I've seen, ever! The cinematography is amazing. The scenery and backgrounds are truly gorgeous. This movie takes you places you normally wouldn't see in a movie, like Greenland and Iceland. The score fits this movie like a pair of good socks, and adds to it immensely.
The acting was very good and I really liked the characters. Ben Stiller (Walter) did an amazing job at portraying a man with a boring life breaking into a new life of action and adventure.
This movie actually surprised me. Because, believe it or not, it's a comedy. The jokes in this movie were very funny and some ever bring a smile to my face just thinking about them.
The dramatic aspects of this film were handled very well and didn't make the funny parts fill awkward. It was funny when needing to be funny and serious when needing to be serious.

Cons- The last half. As I said above, this movie is very funny and serious at the same time. But, that's only counting the first half. I really don't know what happened. Suddenly, it became all serious, and dropped the funny. Not that that's a bad thing, it just felt very strange, like it was a different movie. You have these very goofy parts (mostly found in the day-dreams), then it suddenly turns into a really artsy drama at the end. It felt, like I said, strange. Perhaps I'm looking at it wrong, and this was just showing the progression of Walter Mitty finding himself and becoming brave and adventurous. But still, it felt very odd at times toward the end. It almost made the funny parts in the beginning feel misplaced.
Also, the ending needed something. It ended very abruptly. I believe it needed to be tied back to all of the people he had met throughout his journey.
I would go on, but I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who has not seen the movie yet.

I was definitely surprised by this film. Within the first few minutes I knew I would enjoy it, and truth be told, I did. Even though it had it's rough parts, I liked it. It kinda surprises me that it didn't make as well in the box office; most critic would have eaten this up. I think this was a great film that just about anyone could enjoy. And even if you don't like the story, the gorgeous surrounding of this film are worth taking a look at.

Rating: ★ ★ ★1/2
